Moon Rock

Moon Rock consists of lunar cut mineral ore furniture and light sculptures as well as collectible rocks. Each one unique in the universe.

Studio Furthermore offers us a glimpse into a not-too-distant future which sees lunar mining provide much of the scarce feed material with which industry depends, taking the strain off of Earth's diminished resources.

The designers work with Moon rock much as marble or granite might be worked today. Taking cues from lunar geology, the studio have created a monolithic material language fusing recognisable geometric shapes into chiseled rock formations. Rising and falling over the night sky, a silver-grey body keeps watch as it has done for millennia however much still remains obscure.

It is now thought the Moon was born of Earth during a mass impact event. Characterised by a surface of pristine impact craters, the Moon has something of a shielding effect protecting Earth from solar winds, meteorites and space debris. Within the regolith, a wealth of exotic materials can be found which travelled from further out in deep space and have deposited themselves over the lunar surface. Many scarce materials here on Earth are abundant on the Moon just beyond our reach, for the time being anyway

A bright future may be just around the corner but how and even if such a future is realised depends on the steps taken today. Moon Rock operates on a speculative plain looking forward but it's process is grounded in our present. The result of a development in Studio Furthermore's metal foam process, Moon Rock is cast from 100% recycled aluminium sourced from discarded car wheels. This means no newly extracted metal is required for it's formation.
